Split Peas!

Last week I was perusing my favorite blogs and fell in love with the decor balls that Allison over at House of Hepworths made using split peas.  I love, love, loved the green and just knew that I had to do something with this fabulous idea.  Since Valentines day is Monday, I also knew that I was going to have to take down my conversations cones and replace this wonderful display with something.  So, after a trip to the Dollar Tree and Fry's Food - here is what we have.

DURING:
(Yes, every project begins with Diet Coke!)

AFTER

I found that awesome plaster medallion at Goodwill a while back for $2.99, isn't it lovely.  Yesterday when my Mom and I were working on another project for my walls (maybe next week it will be done), I came across the medallion and the easel and they were a match made in heaven.  I love our new hearth decor.

While I had the hotglue gun out, I whipped up a split pea decor ball and another larger ball out of some twine.  I grabbed a pinto bean decor ball I made before Christmas and added them into this awesome little tray that I found at Family Dollar for $3.00.  I am late to the Decor Ball craze but I am in love with them right now.

  1. These are great! I use them in candle holders just to add a little bit of color but I love the covered cones!

  7. No way! I can't believe this clever idea! I use split peas, corn, and coffee beans as filler in candle holders, but I never thought to use them to create topiaries! Thanks so much for sharing!

  19. Hi Lori! I saw your feature on the "Share.Inspire.Create" post at HoH (mine was one of the knife blocks) and love it! My husband was the first to notice it and say how much he liked them (which is funny because he always said he didn't "get" decor balls, lol). And I have an old bag of split peas I was just thinking of tossing - I'm totally thinking we'll be recreating these! Thanks for the inspiration! =)

  20. So I thought this was an obvious question, but reading through the comments I dont see anyone else asking it...BUT...how do the peas stay nice looking?? I mean theyre a veggie that was frozen and now sitting out in a ever changing room temperature?

  21. Emily - split peas are a dry legume found near other dry beans and rice in the grocery aisle, not a fresh/frozen product. However, as a food product, they DO fade over time. I made mine in February and in October I spray painted it orange because they were quite faded. I love the green though and will likely make another one next month.
