3 Kitchen Projects {DONE}

Today I am sharing 3 quick fixes in the kitchen.  Three more project to check off our get it done list!  Can't believe it took us so long to finish these.

{ Project #13 }
Secure slide out shelf in liquor cabinet {DONE}

I know how this one sounds and honestly, we are not big drinkers but we do keep some bottles around for parties and entertaining. My Dad suggested we move one of the slide-out shelves in a small cupboard to the bottom to allow for the taller bottles to fit. This worked great and the pull out shelf makes it much easier to find what we are looking for. Unfortunately, I took the shelf out but never got it secured. So it sits on the bottom of the cabinet.

As expected, it was a quick 10 minute project that has taken a year and a half to complete!  My husband emptied the cabinet and quite quickly got the shelf secured.  Easy peasy!

{ Project #17}
Replace trash and recycle bin in kitchen {DONE}

I can't believe this one took so long!  It is awesome.  And of course, when I took my trash loving son to Target and told him we were buying new garbage cans he LIT up with excitement.  Nothing pleases this boy more than trash (which is why we own over 12 toy garbage trucks, the Toy Story landfill and oodles of toy and real trash cans).

We are big on recycling in our house so we keep a small bin in the kitchen to separate our trash immediately. The reality is, we generally have more (or at least as much) recycling as we do trash - and probably would have more if we had a bigger container. I have been looking for a slim can that we could use side by side in the kitchen so that this area not only looks good but is more functional.  We have succeeded.

Now, some day I hope to own an awesome Silhouette machine so I can make some fun labels.  In the mean time, we made trash & recycle signs that are taped to the sides.  Works fine but vinyl would be better.  A girl can dream!

{ Project #24 }
Replace Light Bulb in Oven {DONE}

This was a project that should have been completed when we were replacing the glass on the door of our oven but sadly it wasn't.  After "asking" at a couple of stores about what type of light bulb we needed and told they didn't carry it, we figured out that it is a relatively standard appliance light bulb.  Guess we should have just read the packages rather than asking for advice.   Lesson learned, sometimes we know as much or more than the employees at the store.

I would say that this is an easy job, however sometimes the contortionist act that we need to do to reach the back of the oven can be challenging and comical. Thank heavens that my husband took on this challenge. Thanks hubby! Check that one off the list!

As an added bonus, last week I spent a little time cleaning the inside of the oven too.  It looks awesome.  It wasn't horrible but I didn't realize how much build up there was on the sides and back of the oven.  Check that one off my spring cleaning list!  Yay me!

Come back tomorrow when I check off a few projects upstairs!

PROJECT Check-Up! I'm back!

Well, I have nothing more to say than - sorry if you thought I dropped off the face of the earth.  I didn't, I am here and I am trying to get back in to blogging.

Despite not being around, we have actually completed a few projects around the house.  This week I will begin to share the progress we have made on our 24 projects on our To Do list (a laundry list of to-dos fashioned after the list of fellow blogger Allison at House of Hepworths)!  These are projects both big and small that we have been putting off for various reasons and just need to get them done.

Since I published this list, I have had many friends say that they too have a list of projects and quick repairs that they just keep putting off.  So here is a taste of a few of the projects that we have knocked off this list!

The very first weekend of this challenge, we were able to complete 6 projects in just 2 days and still have some fun and family time.  That should give you an idea of how easy it was - so get off the computer and just do it!  (Since we are now almost 2 months later reporting in, you can see that blogging about these is much more difficult!)

Here are the first 2 projects!  DONE!  Yay us!

{ Project #2 }
Replace popped light switches{DONE}

This was an easy one!  Well sort of.  We had replaced several of these switches when we originally bought the house but missed a couple.  My husband grabbed the contractors box of switches we had bought.

Hint:  Look for a deal.  If you need a bunch of something, check if they sell them in multi-packs.  We needed 8 or so switches so instead of buying them individually, we purchased a contractors pack (at Lowes) that had 12 switches for a deeply discounted price.  The contractors pack was the same price as if we had purchased 3 or 4 inidividually.

We did have to make a quick trip to Lowes though.  The switch in the hallway is a "common swtich" - meaning that there are two switches that control that one light.  We have a switch by the back door and a switch at the other end of the hallway that allows you to turn the light on from either end of the hall.  Well, these types of switches have one additional connection on them called the common line.  This line recognizes whether the light is on or off and determines what the switch needs to do when it is flipped.

The trip was quick and the project is DONE!  Yay us!
{ Project #7 }
Repair and repaint ceiling in front room ►{DONE}

Again this was a quick one.  My wonderful husband scraped away the little bit of flaking texture.  Then, using a basic spray on knock-down texture we filled in the area.  While you wouldn't use this aerosol spray texture for an entire room, it is perfect for patch jobs and repairs.

Make sure to protect your floor and anything else in the area as you will likely have some over spray.  Once you have prepped your area, simply follow the direction on the can.  We sprayed a light to medium coat of texture over our desired area.  After about 5 minutes we went back in and gently "knocked it down" with a wide scraper or trowel.

We let it dry for a day and then touched up the paint. While it is not "perfect" it sure looks alot better than it did previously.  Ultimately, we need to repaint this entire section of ceiling but to be honest, that is NOT happening any time soon.  For now, ceiling repair and touch-up - DONE!

I will be back tomorrow with a couple of more projects that we have checked off the list!

Have a great week!

Oven Door Glass

Have you ever had one of those days when it seems that just about everything you touch breaks?  Well I have!  Christmas day as a matter of fact.  After an awesome morning watching the kids open gifts and play with their new toys...bad karma struck.  I dropped my good camera and broke the lens. And then...

I was baking some 5-minute artisan bread for dinner.  The recipe calls for a water bath.  Evidently I had the racks to close together and when I pulled the rack out to remove the bread from the oven, I dragged the water bath with and spilled it on the hot oven door.  It sizzled a bit and then this happened...

Yep, the glass broke.  It popped and my husband and I just stood there in disbelief.  I still can't believe that this water that was HOT could do that. .

Fortunately, my wonderful husband stopped by an appliance parts store today and was able to pick up a new piece of glass.  We installed it tonight.

We had read online that this can "easily" be a DIY job so we figured we would give it a try.  I don't know that I would describe it as "easy" but it is fixed.  It was definitely an all hands on deck job which is why this is the only "during" picture I have.

We unscrewed the door (as shown in the picture).  Then we needed to unscrew the panel that holds the glass in place.  This was the tricky part as this piece is also held in with the spring that holds the door closed.

It seemed to be a bit of a dance to get the glass, rope seal, insulation and panel lined up and in place while trying to hold the springs open and screw the panel back in place.  Honestly, we really could have used another pair of hands.

Needless to say, it is in and we are back in business.  My son is very excited because he has wanted to make the Shrinky Dinks he got for Christmas for a couple of days now.

Oh, and I will be cleaning my oven tomorrow too. The pictures reminded me how dirty it is.

Lucky or Clueless? Lessons Learned!

Lately we have been having a string of good luck!  Well, I like to call it luck but really, it just shows how clueless one can be in this consumerist world.  Recently we have had a string of appliances stop working - to the tune of what could have been over $1,000 in replacements.  Fortunately, that was not our fate.  As DIY hobbyists, we are willing to give a fix a try before hiring it out.  Of course, that is not where this story begins.

Almost a year ago, we bought our dream home, our forever house.  We purchased a foreclosure and as you know, you get what you get and you can't get upset.  While our home was in relatively good condition, there were lots of little things that resulted in a series of small repairs and cosmetic fixes.  There were items that have not worked perfectly since we took possession, but we figured we would just use them until we couldn't use them any more.

Lighting

Notice the high ceilings!  Not an easy
install for this large, heavy fixture.
The previous owner took several of the light fixtures from our home so we needed to replace them.  This was not a problem as we got to select fixtures that were our taste and not the builder standard which is the same in every home in the neighborhood.  We headed over to the Habitat for Humanity store and found several awesome fixtures, two of which were new, in the box!  LUCKY!

My husband installed them himself.  After installing (and uninstalling) the fixture in the formal dining room - 3 times - I posed the question, could it be the light switch!  Of course, it was.  We had already picked up a contractor box of light switches as many of the switches in our home were damaged (see pic).  After a quick, 2 minute install, we had light!

Notice how the switch has been popped from abuse.
It still works but looks bad.  We had LOTS of these!
Lesson Learned:
If something doesn't work - check the switch!

Garbage Disposal

Our garbage disposal has been temperamental since we moved in. We would flip the switch and it was hit or miss as to whether it would turn on or not. You could generally flip the switch a few times and it would finally click on. Well, this week, it stopped coming on all together. We knew we would have to replace it eventually and decided to wait until it finally gave out.  So we headed to the hardware store, picked up a $200 new garbage disposal and set out to install it.

Fortunately for us, since we bought the same brand, we decided not to replace the mounting bracket. So my husband pulled out the old one, installed the new one. We flipped the switch and, yep, nothing! So hmmm, could it be the light switch? Or the outlet? Of course! Lucky for us, it was a $.95 switch - not a $200 appliance! Happy dance!

Notice the proximity to sink - Not surprising that it could need replacing!

So of course, we reinstalled our old dirty smelly garbage disposal and saved ourselves $199!  I know, who wouldn't want a nice shiny, stench-free sink and disposal - but honestly, I want the money more than that.  I can clean my sink later!

Lesson Learned:
If something doesn't work, check the switch!
(Seeing a pattern here!?!)

Garage Door Opener
So, a couple of weeks ago when our garage door opener finally gave in.  For several days we needed to wait in the driveway to make sure that it closed all of the way.  Then one evening, when we returned home the garage door lifted part-way up before it slammed down - the gear broke and the chain dropped.  My husband was super busy that week so we called on a friend who recently worked for an overhead door company to help us out.

We went out and bought a new, $200 garage door opener and our friend was going to install it.  He came over, took one look at it and said, return the garage door opener! I can fix it.  (Love him!!!) He went out, picked up a $35 replacement part and within 15 minutes had it fixed - and I might add, it hasn't ran that smooth since we bought the house.

Returned tot he store - saved us $165!!!  Yeah Us!!!

Unfortunately, I came home from dropping the kids off last week and the garage door was half open - it had not closed completely again.  Turns out, this issue is completely unrelated to the fix needed above.  Garage door openers have an eye sensor near the base of the door that when triggered, does not allow the door to close which is important if you have kids, pets, etc.  Well, if the sunlight hits it just right, it too can cause the sensor to be triggered.  Our home faces south and evidently, the sun this time of year here in Arizona is at the perfect angle to trigger the door to stop.  Simple solution, I taped a piece of paper around the sensor to shield the sun.  So far, so good!

Lesson Learned:
If something doesn't work, check the switch
call a friend who knows what they are doing!

Washing Machine

New Washer - Awesome Capacity!

As mentioned in my laundry room update post, my washing machine recently stopped working.  I will admit, we did not call a repairman.  Instead we went on impulse and purchased a new washer.  There were several reasons for this.  The biggest being that our old washer had a VERY small capacity.  The washer was purchased pre-children when most of our clothes was sent to the dry cleaners.  Now with growing kids, our laundry has grown 10 fold.

Lesson Learned:
When something doesn't work, go with your heart and
replace it with what you really want and need!

OR

So, are we lucky or Clueless?  Probably a bit of both, but I am going with lucky as we saved lots of money and only lost a little time as we fumbled through our own DIY adventures!
